The rise of antimicrobial resistance is a threat to modern medicine globally. In this talk, the speakers discuss some of the major challenges and how researchers at LSHTM tackle it within the European and Western African setting.

Dr Saffiatou Darboe, MRCG at LSHTM
Dr Saffiatou Darboe is the Laboratory Lead and Microbiologist with Partners In Health Sierra Leone. Her work focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) containment, alongside strengthening laboratory quality management systems and diagnostic capacity across sub-Saharan Africa.
She has led and managed multiple microbiology and diagnostics laboratories and is actively engaged in scientific leadership and advocacy. Dr Darboe serves as a Country Ambassador for the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and is a co-founder of Africa Women in Science. She collaborates closely with the Ministries of Health in The Gambia and Sierra Leone on AMR containment initiatives.
