Uchenna Osakwe
Student | Full-time | NigeriaMSc Public Health
Educational/professional background
My name is Uchenna Michael Osakwe, but I prefer to go by Uche. I am currently a full-time student at LSHTM, pursuing an MSc Public Health with a specialisation in Health Economics.
As a Nigerian, my professional foundation is clinical. I earned my MBBS from China Medical University and subsequently worked at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). This frontline role gave me crucial insight not only into individual patient needs but also the systemic inefficiencies and resource constraints inherent in healthcare delivery across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). In addition, I was exposed to the burden of communicable diseases in Nigeria while working in the Initiative for Prevention and Control of Diseases (IPCD), which targeted mainly Tuberculosis (TB) control initiatives. This work highlighted a critical realisation that effectively overcoming major public health obstacles, like TB eradication, requires robust policy, efficient resource allocation, and strategic financial planning. This necessity motivated me to pursue the Health Economics stream.
Research interests or career goals
My core career goal is to transition from treating individual patients to driving system-level impact. I aim to apply the rigorous analytical skills I am gaining to design and implement sustainable, equitable healthcare policies that improve system efficiency, accelerate resource allocation, and ultimately support disease control efforts in vulnerable populations.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I chose LSHTM because I firmly believe there is no better place to acquire the necessary tools to effect global health change. The school provides the unparalleled academic expertise, world-class facilities, and the essential community of like-minded individuals that I need to achieve my ambitious goals.
I am thrilled to serve as an ambassador and share the LSHTM mission.
