Sophia Acheampong
Student | Full-time | GhanaMSc Public Health
Educational/professional background
I hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Ghana. After graduating, I worked for two years completing my medical housemanship (internship), an experience that deepened my understanding of how social and systemic factors influence health outcomes. Alongside my clinical work, I have collaborated with several NGOs in Ghana on community-based reproductive and mental health initiatives. These experiences strengthened my passion for health equity and preventive care.
Research interests or career goals
My research interests centre on maternal, adolescent, reproductive, and child health, as well as health equity and community health-systems strengthening. I aspire to integrate clinical experience with public-health research to design sustainable, evidence-based solutions that improve access to quality healthcare in resource-limited settings.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I chose the MSc Public Health because I wanted to move beyond individual patient care to address the broader determinants of health. LSHTM’s global reputation, interdisciplinary approach, and diverse, inclusive community make it the ideal place to develop the skills needed to drive equitable, evidence-informed change. The school’s commitment to improving health worldwide aligns with my values and aspirations, offering the opportunity to grow, collaborate, and contribute to meaningful impact in public health.
