MSc Public Health for Global Practice

Priyanka Chinniah

Educational/professional background

I'm a full-time student on the MSc Public Health for Global Practice programme. I'm South African and previously studied medicine (MBChB) at the University of Cape Town, after which I worked as a medical doctor for the past four years.

Research interests or career goals

My special interest lies in newborn and child health, managing conditions ranging from malnutrition to infectious diseases in resource-constrained hospital settings. This clinical experience has given me deep insight into how systemic issues impact individual patient outcomes in South African child health services.

Why I chose LSHTM/my programme

I chose LSHTM because of its strong focus on Africa and exceptional epidemiological research. As someone passionate about African healthcare, LSHTM's commitment to addressing health challenges in low- and middle-income countries aligned perfectly with my career goals of improving maternal and child health outcomes at a population level.

Extra information

I can offer advice to prospective students with medical backgrounds considering the transition from clinical practice to public health, as well as insights into resource-limited healthcare systems, clinical paediatrics, and maternal and child health interventions at the African context level.
