MSc Control of Infectious Diseases

Philippa Lock

Educational/professional background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology at Queen Mary University of London, where my dissertation explored molecular adaptations in interferon-stimulated genes and their role in viral tolerance and asymptomatic persistence in bats, with implications for cross-species transmission. Alongside my studies, I have volunteered with Oxfam and children’s mental health charities, which strengthened my interest in community-focused global health work.

Research interests or career goals

My research interests include bat-borne viruses, leishmaniasis, and HIV. While my career path is still developing, I aspire to work with organisations like Médecins Sans Frontières, contributing to humanitarian responses and supporting communities affected by health crises.

Why I chose LSHTM/my programme

I chose LSHTM because of its genuine dedication to global health. Beyond its world-renowned reputation, LSHTM embodies its mission through impactful research that informs policy and improves lives worldwide. The MSc Control of Infectious Diseases particularly appealed to me for its interdisciplinary approach, bridging epidemiology, immunology, and public health practices, and the opportunity to learn from experts whose work shapes international policy and response strategies.
