Educational/professional background

I obtained my first degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Jos and proceeded for residency training in Ophthalmology at Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos. I currently work as an ophthalmologist at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi State, Nigeria, where I took a year off for an MSc Public Health for Eye Care at LSHTM.

What I enjoyed most about studying at LSHTM

I enjoyed every bit of my study at LSHTM, moving from one lecture location to another kept me exercising and fit. I had the opportunity to meet with amazing people with cultural diversity. I got along well with other students from all walks of life. I developed networks which I am still leveraging on and has widened my circle of influence. London is surely a place to be, any day, any time because it is a home away from home. London is cosmopolitan and without travelling the globe I have met people from across the world in one place. I had opportunities to volunteer on school open days and have been a student ambassador while in school and now as an alumni ambassador, which has helped me share my experience and encourage others to pursue a career at LSHTM.

Since graduating I have been...

Since graduating from LSHTM, I have continued with my clinical practice, training of medical students and resident doctors. As part of my community service, I have been involved in medical outreaches, offering free eye surgeries to under-served people and working with charitable, humanitarian, and developmental non-profit organisations. I also provide health talks to the hospital community, on radio and TV talk shows especially to mark World Glaucoma Week and World Sight Day. I participated in field surveys - Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (Plateau 2023 and Jigawa 2025). It was a great experience where the Peek technology was deployed to examine and input data. The Bloomberg School health program is in the pipeline in Bauchi, Jigawa and Kebbi States and I will be participating in the Bauchi team to provide training for teachers and provide clinical support.
