Fikri Alkhatib
Student | Full-time | SingaporeMSc Public Health
Educational/professional background
I am a community-based researcher and service provider at a HIV non-profit organisation in Singapore. Prior to this, I worked in government policy. I hold an MA in Sociology from Columbia University and BSc in Government from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Research interests or career goals
My interests are in exploring how structural inequalities and systems of power/domination shape health outcomes, particularly for LGBTQIA+ and racially minoritised populations and in sexual and reproductive health. I am interested in public health research that is grounded in social theory, and am working on developing my skills as a mixed methods researcher. I strongly believe in participatory, advocacy-oriented research and hope to help bridge the gap between academia and the communities that I care about.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I chose LSHTM for the depth and breadth of modules available. The school may be small, but its specialisation in public health means that we get exposure to far more perspectives and expertise than we would elsewhere. Also: I'm easily bored, so London is a great place to be to avoid that!
