MSc Control of Infectious Diseases

Emanuelle Wisniewski

Educational/professional background

I graduated from the Pequeno Príncipe Health and Research Complex, which was named by the American magazine Newsweek as one of the best paediatric hospitals in the world and the first and largest specialised children's hospital in Latin America. I completed my education with a full scholarship through the Programa Universidade para Todos (ProUni) by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. I focused my undergraduate studies on infection control and epidemiological surveillance in the state of Paraná (southern Brazil). I worked as a nurse in a paediatric department, leading health care workers, and in the Infectious Control and Epidemiological Surveillance department at Marcelino Champagnat Hospital - awarded in the same year by the Joint Commission International (JCI) - and at the public Cajuru Hospital, accredited by the National Accreditation Organisation (ONA). I hold a specialisation in Nursing Infectiology from UniOpet.

Research interests or career goals

The area of child and adolescent health is what interests me the most right now, and my expectation is to continue working with children who need support due to their vulnerable situation regarding the control of infectious diseases in developing countries, such as the one where I come from. My intention is to be able to work in conjunction with epidemiological surveillance to offer healthcare and basic sanitation to those who are still suffering from a lack of it in Brazil.

Why I chose LSHTM/my programme

I chose MSc Control of Infectious Diseases due to the modern and technological structure, the support from academic professors and Student Services for international students is great, and its recognition in the area of tropical infectious disease control.
