Educational/professional background
Hi! My name is Brooktawit (Brook) Alemayehu, and I am an Ethiopian-American from Washington, DC. I earned my BA in International Studies at American University and have a specialization in environmental sustainability and global health. Following my undergraduate program, I worked at a global health non-profit for three years and worked on a variety of projects and health areas, ranging from diagnostics to NTDs.
Research interests or career goals
I was always keen on working abroad and directly with local communities to address health challenges, which led me to choose the MSc Public Health for Global Practice programme.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I also chose LSHTM due to its world-renowned reputation in the field of public health, and I saw opportunities to gain technical expertise across a wide variety of course modules. In terms of my research interests, I would like to better understand the urban-environmental nexus within the East African region and hope to tackle issues related to urbanization, environmental degradation, and health equity. Looking ahead, I would like to transition into project and program management roles within the public or private sector.
Extra information
I am happy to share my experience with prospective students from the US and can provide tips on moving to London and navigating life at LSHTM.
