Bethany Chow

Educational/professional background

I am a third-year MBBS student and Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman’s Scholar at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), currently intercalating at the MSc Public Health (Health Economics) programme at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

I have held various leadership roles, serving as Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Student Society of Microbiology, and as the co-founder and illustrator of the “Germ Tales: Introducing Microbiology through Stories” project, leading medical students in creating a children’s book on microbiology for underprivileged primary school students. I am also the illustrator of the book 《逆光而行:香港年輕癌症患者的身影》(ISBN: 978-988-237-382-2), capturing the resilience of young cancer patients and their stories of reintegrating into society.

Research interests or career goals

I am interested in surgery and oncology, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma resection, liver transplantation and hepatitis, in addition to health financing strategies and reducing inequalities in cancer outcomes. Moreover, I am interested in medical illustration, facilitating knowledge dissemination through simplifying complicated anatomy.

Why I chose LSHTM/my programme

I joined LSHTM for its strong academic standing and reputation in public health. The diverse LSHTM community has broadened my horizons and equipped me with a more global outlook on different health issues, allowing me to apply insights to local healthcare delivery.

Extra information

I am happy to contact prospective students about intercalating at LSHTM, studying the Health Economics stream, applying to LSHTM, and my life in London. I am also an avid knitter and crocheter, and I am the founder of the LSHTM Knitting/Crocheting Club.
