Why I chose LSHTM/my programme

I am a strong believer that learning is a lifelong journey. Education is not something that is dictated by age, meaning that once you hit a certain age, the learning stops or the dream of pursuing an advanced degree is over.

I am in my late 40’s and have had a career in healthcare that has spanned almost 25 years. I have been happy and challenged at work, but I wanted something more. In 2023, I decided that I wanted to go back to school and public health has always been my passion, yet never my work.

LSHTM was my first choice because of its reputation and its forward-thinking approach to the health inequities that face our world today. When I saw they were launching a new program in Humanitarian Health, I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the first cohort, and I have never looked back.

I am now entering my fourth and final year of my Master's, and this experience has changed the way I view healthcare and the world. I have had the privilege of meeting amazing professors and advisors and even as a distance learner, I have had the opportunity to make lifelong friends.

Extra information

I would advise anyone with a passion for public health to explore the opportunities at LSHTM because it offers more than just a degree, it offers a life changing experience.

My one piece of advice for anyone thinking about enrolling or enrolled in a distance learning program is to make the effort to get to know your classmates. We have an amazing class and since many of us started together, we have been learning now for 4 years – but what made the difference is that we reached out and created a network for support as well as fun. For the past three years, our distance learning group has met in London, visited each other in our respective countries and have become good friends and this has made a huge difference. When you are a distance learning, you might sit alone at your desk - but if you reach out, you are never alone.
