My DTM&H Journey at LSHTM: Learning, Growth, and a Vision for Better Healthcare

Andrew, a Zambian medical professional, blends medicine with an MBA to improve healthcare. At the University Teaching Hospital, his passion for public health led him to pursue a Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) at LSHTM, equipping him with vital skills in tropical disease management and outbreak response.

Why I Chose the DTM&H Programme

Zambia faces a significant burden of tropical diseases and, as a medical professional, I have seen firsthand how these illnesses affect communities. I wanted to deepen my understanding of tropical medicine and strengthen my ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent these diseases effectively. The Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) programme at LSHTM stood out because of its strong focus on both clinical and public health aspects, as well as its hands-on approach to learning.

This diploma has provided me with the opportunity to enhance my knowledge of infectious diseases, epidemiology, and outbreak response. It was the perfect programme to bridge my clinical experience with broader public health strategies that can improve healthcare outcomes in my country.

Learning in a Diverse and Practical Environment

One of the most valuable aspects of the DTM&H programme has been the practical, hands-on learning experience. The in-person sessions have allowed me to develop critical laboratory skills, such as preparing slides and using microscopes for disease diagnosis. This training is essential for effective disease identification and management, particularly in resource-limited settings like Zambia.

Additionally, studying alongside classmates from diverse backgrounds has been an enriching experience. We have shared insights from different healthcare systems around the world, learning from each other's experiences and approaches. This diversity has broadened my perspective and reinforced the importance of collaborative global health efforts.

Eye-Opening Discussions on Global Health

Beyond technical skills, the programme has encouraged deep discussions on the broader challenges in global health. One of the most thought-provoking topics we explored was decolonising global health. This discussion made me reflect on how healthcare policies, research, and interventions are often shaped by external influences and how we can work towards a more equitable approach to healthcare in low- and middle-income countries.

The guest lectures were another highlight of the programme. Experts from various fields shared the latest research and real-world case studies, making the learning experience dynamic and relevant. Engaging with these professionals outside of class provided valuable networking opportunities and further insight into career paths in global health.

My Future Plans: Applying Knowledge to Zambia

As I complete this programme, I am eager to apply what I have learned to public health initiatives in Zambia. My goal is to contribute to outbreak investigations, operational research, and capacity-building programmes that strengthen our healthcare system. With my combined background in medicine and public health, I hope to play a role in bridging clinical practice with effective public health strategies.

Additionally, I am passionate about education and look forward to mentoring and training the next generation of medical professionals in Zambia. I believe that by sharing knowledge and skills, we can collectively improve healthcare delivery and disease management in our country.

Advice for Future Students

For anyone considering the DTM&H programme at LSHTM, I highly recommend it. Whether you are looking to enhance your clinical and laboratory skills or expand your knowledge in public health, this programme offers an exceptional learning experience. The faculty, research opportunities, and diverse student cohort make LSHTM a unique place to study.

If I were to describe this programme in three words, they would be: inspirational, eye-opening, and thought-provoking. It has truly been a transformative journey, and I am excited to take these lessons forward in my career.
