1-minute read: What studying Health Policy, Planning & Financing at LSHTM & LSE means

Goodness Ogeyi Odey studied MSc Health Policy, Planning, and Financing at The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She explains how she was drawn to LSHTM's global impact and its alumni, the diversity of London and the collaborative learning environment at LSHTM were merely some of the highlights in London.
Goodness Odey

My academic and professional background is in public health having studied that in my bachelor's degree and I have been involved in health policy, advocacy, research and multi-stakeholder engagements to advance health equity.

LSHTM stood out in my choice of an institution to further my academics due to its outstanding impact in global public health research and systems strengthening as exemplified by the Alumni community, many of whom I consider role models, while being lucky to have a few as mentors. These culminated in my interest to improve my capacity to contribute to health systems strengthening at the intersection of health policy, financing and management leading me to apply and study for an MSc Health Policy, Planning & Financing at LSHTM and LSE.

The impact of the programme

The HPPF programme has provided me with an in-depth understanding of the dynamics involved in the design, implementation and evaluation of health policies, financing mechanisms, research and management of the health system, viewed from varying contexts and perspectives. I am highly impressed with my critical and forward thinking abilities through and beyond my master's program. The learning and extracurricular engagements at LSHTM and LSE have greatly strengthened my capacity to contribute to the field of health systems especially in resource-limited settings through policies, financing, multi-stakeholder engagement and research. As progress in my career, I hope to continue challenging my worldview in understanding the causes of things, a mindset I have come to imbibe more, drawing from LSE's Motto. I am currently exploring opportunities in these areas and staying hopeful about the outcome.

London, London, London

The diversity of the city is one of the best aspects of studying in London. At every point in time, you are meeting, observing and experiencing a diversity of cultures, people, languages and styles. I have found this very enriching in my socio-cultural experience studying in London as it is also reflected in the quality of my postgraduate studies at LSHTM. More exciting is how this diversity blends beautifully into each other, providing a robust learning experience everywhere you find yourself.

My advice

Be open to learning, especially from your peers. I found the student-focused seminars very insightful during my studies given the rich experience and expertise many LSHTM postgraduate students bring to the program. So be open to learning from your professors as well as your peers.

Be kind, London can get really cold for most part of your study year, but stay warm at heart. I believe that being kind is being human.

Most importantly, have fun! Make the most of every experience and opportunity! LSHTM has so much to offer, so maximise the experience fully. Your master's is only for a year or less, it will go by so fast. Stay present and enjoy the process!
