- General welcome
We are delighted to welcome you to LSHTM and to the new MRes Infectious and Tropical Diseases!
We hope you enjoy your time at the School, and that you are able to make the most of all the academic opportunities that will be open to you through interactions with your fellow students (MRes, MSc and PhD) and LSHTM researchers.
The School is a multi-cultural hub of academic excellence, and you will be part of this vibrant research community for the next 12 months.
- Welcome Week
View your Welcome Week 2026 timetable here.
The first week is a relaxed introduction to studying and research at LSHTM. You will complete enrolment, set up your LSHTM email account, and finalise your accommodation and other personal matters.
There will be MRes-specific sessions where you will learn more about the year ahead, get to know your fellow students, and meet the Programme Director, Module Organisers, and your project Supervisors. The structure of the MRes programme and its expectations will be explained. Finally, you will meet your Personal Tutor who will provide one-to-one guidance and support your academic progress throughout your time at the LSHTM.
If you require disability support or special assessment arrangements, you will have the opportunity to book an appointment with a Student Advisor from Student Services to put this in place.
- Term 1
During the first half of term 1, you will develop your detailed Research Proposal – taking your supervisor’s initial idea and developing it into a fully-fledged and approved research programme, which you will execute during your Research Project. Alongside this, you will identify your project-specific training needs and identify School resources to address these. Finally, you will identify a programme of seminars that will further inform the development of your research project, as well as your development as a researcher. These three core activities will be carried out under the guidance of the three MRes module teams, with the support of your project supervisors.
Research Projects should start in late November 2026 but no later than 4th January 2027, depending on receipt of all necessary research approvals and completion of essential training.
- Module choices
As well as the compulsory MRes-specific modules (Research Proposal, Research Seminars and Research Project), you will also complete two elective modules in terms 2 and 3. As an MRes student, you will have access to the School’s full range of intensive and distance learning MSc modules. What you choose to study will depend on the focus of your research project, your personal interests and your future plans. We will discuss the process for identifying and choosing your elective modules during Welcome Week.
