Global Health Policy by Distance Learning (pre-course info)

Welcome from the Programme Directors

Virtual Learning Environment and contacts

Organisation

Moodle contains a number of different pages/zones, including: module pages, which house the relevant study materials and resources specific to each module; the ‘GHM Student Zone’, which houses resources that apply to all Global Health Policy (GHP) modules; and, the ‘DL General Zone’, which houses resources that apply to all distance learning programmes.  You will gain access to these different pages/zones. It is very important that you visit these pages/zones and familiarise yourself with the resources available on each.

Set your timezone

Once you gain access to Moodle, please check that your time zone is set correctly within your Moodle profile. Learning activities, such as live webinars, will be scheduled and entered into the Moodle calendar and once you have set your time zone correctly, Moodle will automatically update calendar events to display the correct local time for you, irrespective of the IT server’s time zone in the UK, or the time zones employed by your tutors. To check/set your time zone within your Moodle profile please follow the instructions given in the document ‘How to update your time zone in Moodle’ which will be located in the ‘Technology and Enhanced Learning Resources’ section of the GHM Student Zone.

Communication

Communication with tutors and your fellow students will be conducted via Moodle.  The GHP Student Zone, the DL General Zone and each Moodle module page has a ‘Noticeboard (no-reply forum)’ upon which staff will post important messages that relate to your studies. Each Moodle module page will house a number of discussion forums which you will use to communicate with your tutors and fellow students. Please review the LSHTM Student Charter located in the GHM Student Zone – it summarises the standards of service which LSHTM aspires to offer students and the standards of conduct which students should expect and aspire to follow.

Set your preferences for Moodle notifications

Once you log into Moodle, you will be automatically subscribed to all Noticeboards and forums for the GHP modules for which you are registered. You will receive a single email notification in real time, for each message that is posted. However, you might, instead, prefer to receive one notification email a day (at 5pm UK time) which includes all messages posted from the past 24 hours (approximately). If you prefer this option, you will need to change your ‘Email digest type’ on Moodle. To locate this field sign into Moodle, go to the top right-hand corner of the screen and click on the downward arrow next to your name, then click on ‘Preferences’. On the left of the screen, under ‘User Account’ click on ‘Forum preferences’ and then change the field named ‘Email digest type’ to ‘Complete (daily email with full posts)’.

Despite receiving Moodle notifications, we recommend you check the Noticeboards regularly to ensure you do not miss important information posted there. If you notice you are not receiving notifications from a particular forum, you will need to subscribe to the forum. Guidance on how to use Moodle, including instructions on forum subscription can be found in the GHP Student Handbook located in the ‘GHM Student Zone’ and in the ‘Technology and Enhanced Learning Resources’ area of the ‘GHM Student Zone’

Support and Engagement

We encourage you to stay engaged throughout your course.
Once signed into Moodle, please take the opportunity to introduce yourself in the 'GHP Introductions and Networking' forum in the ‘GHM Student Zone’ and visit the ‘Online Community Building’ areas located on each of the GHP individual module pages to engage with the introduction forums and activities located there.

Visit the ‘Contacting Fellow Students’ section on the DL General Zone. This section provides guidance on ways to contact and liaise with your fellow students, including details on the LSHTM Distance Learning Facebook group that you can join.

Useful Contacts

If you have admission-related queries please contact [email protected]. Prior to registration / enrolment, if you have any study-related queries please contact [email protected]

Once the academic year begins, any queries should be directed to the Education Administrator (GHP), at the dedicated mailbox for GHP students: [email protected].  Contact information for other departments at LSHTM will be available within the GHP Student Handbook, in the GHM Student Zone, once the academic year begins.

Welcome Week

‘Welcome Week’ for distance learning students will take place from Monday 12th to Friday 16th October. Make sure you look out for messages about Welcome Week once the academic year begins and try to attend as many sessions as possible, especially the ‘Meet the GHP Programme Team’ events – we are looking forward to meeting you. Also, look out for details on the GHP Student Zone Noticeboard of the GHP Induction session that is normally scheduled shortly after Welcome Week.

Registration

Please plan your studies carefully and ensure you are registered for all modules you actively wish to study that academic year, including any resits. This ensures access to the latest version of the study materials and the assessment submission systems (Formative Assignments, Assessed Assignments, Exams, Report).

Study Materials

Your study materials and reading lists for each module are available online via Moodle. You can access these materials at any time while signed in to Moodle through your module link, and you can also download them so you can view them offline.

This means you'll be able to access your study materials throughout the academic year, and even after the Moodle pages close at the end of the year.

To download them, go to the relevant module, find the Study Materials section, and click the Download Study Materials icon. Then choose Save As to save the zip file to your computer or an external storage device.

Programme specific information

The regulations and programme documentation contain important information for every aspect of your studies, from registration through to requirements for graduation:

  • The Global Health Policy 2026-27 Programme Specification  and the 2026-27 LSHTM Programme Regulations documents can be found on the LSHTM website and will also be accessible via the ‘GHM Student Zone’ on Moodle from 1st October.
  • The Student Handbook, located in the ‘GHM Student Zone’ on Moodle, provides useful information about the programme, including suggestions on how to get the most out of your programme.
  • Links to important provisions of the 2026-27 LSHTM Academic Manual are located in the

‘DL General Zone’ on Moodle within the ‘Regulations, policies and procedures’ area.

Assessment

Modules on the Global Health Policy programme are assessed by:

  • Formative assignments (FAs) – submission of FAs is not compulsory. Grades given to FAs do not contribute to any credit or the final grade for a module. FAs are provided to give you an opportunity to receive a grade and personalised feedback from tutors on your performance. Please note FAs have specified deadlines. The deadlines and requirements for each FA can be found in the assignment instructions located on the relevant Moodle module page.

  • Assessed assignments (AAs) – some modules are formally assessed, partly or wholly, by AAs. Submission of AAs is compulsory. These are part of the formal assessment of your work and the grades contribute to your final results. Submission deadlines for AAs are specified in the individual module specifications. AA questions and information about the requirements for each question are provided in the assignment documents located on the relevant Moodle module page.

  • Unseen written examinations – some modules are formally assessed, partly or wholly, by a two-hour 15-minute unseen written examination. Examinations are held in June.

Assignments (FAs and AAs) must be submitted to the Assignment Management System (AMS). Unseen written exam papers are downloaded from the Exam Management System (EMS) and respective answers must be uploaded to the same system. Information about unseen examinations will be provided later, once the academic year has commenced.

Mixed Mode

ONLY for students who have already passed three core modules.

LSHTM offers the opportunity for students registered on the distance learning MSc or PG Diploma Global Health Policy programmes to study modules on campus in London, in place of some distance learning elective modules – this is called mixed mode study. Information about mixed mode study for 2026/27, including all eligibility requirements, the application process and the modules available to be taken this coming year will be available in the ‘DL General Zone’ in Moodle.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism detection software (Turnitin) is used. You must follow LSHTM policies and AI guidance.

Resit Students

You will need to re-register for any modules where you need to re-sit either the Assessed Assignment or the Exam to ensure you receive access to updated materials for the new academic year and are able to submit assessments.

Please note that re-sit grades will be capped at 2 (see the Academic Manual).
