CDLS & Biobanking Services

Clinical diagnostic laboratory services
Accredited to ISO 15189:2022 standards, our labs offer reliable diagnostics with cutting-edge technology in the laboratory disciplines of haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology. Our main laboratory in Entebbe, staffed by skilled technologists and managed by dedicated data, quality, and laboratory managers, ensures precision with high-throughput technology to support both routine and complex testing.

Through our Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Services (CDLS), we deliver accurate and timely test results that facilitate the Unit’s core clinical studies, trials, and surveillance activities. These services are also offered in our laboratories in Masaka and Kyamulibwa, where testing continues to support field-based research in both infectious, non-communicable diseases, emerging and re - emerging health threats.

Sample collection and management
Our platform also plays a key role in sample collection and management. Specimens collected at our field station in Masaka City and the General Population Cohort in Kyamulibwa, Kalungu district are transported under GDP-compliant logistics and integrated into a centralised system through a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), ensuring sample integrity, traceability, and data security across the diagnostic workflow.

Our Canadian Tissue Repository Network certified Biobanking facility designed to support both prospective and retrospective studies. With over 80 ultra-low temperature freezers and bulk liquid nitrogen systems,  the biobank provides a secure environment for long-term biospecimen preservation. The major services offered include sample processing, retrieval and distribution as well as international shipments, enabling researchers to access high-quality, well-annotated samples for longitudinal and multi-site research. Our storage infrastructure meets the highest international standards for biorepositories, positioning the platform as a vital resource for global health studies.

Stakeholder Collaboration
Collaboration is at the heart of our operations. We work closely with government ministries, regional hospitals, academic institutions, and international research partners to ensure our services align with national and global health priorities. Strong integration with the Uganda Virus Research Institute, the Ministry of Health, Makerere University, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine enables our laboratory outputs to inform public health policy and improve health outcomes on the ground.

Researchers whose projects align with the Unit’s scientific themes or those requiring ISO-accredited laboratory and biobanking support are invited to collaborate with us.

About Us

Founded in 1988, the Clinical Laboratories and Biobanking Platform has grown into a cornerstone of the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit’s research infrastructure. With sites in Entebbe, Masaka, and Kyamulibwa, the platform delivers accredited diagnostic services and biobanking support while championing regional capacity building and quality standards in laboratory science.

Our Resources

Our operations span six laboratories across three regions, equipped with high-throughput analytical platforms and a world-class biobank. Supported by an expert team and robust Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), we ensure data integrity and sample traceability while advancing research excellence.
