Mapping the Global Burden of Plasmodium Vivax Malaria
Abstract: Plasmodium vivax is the most geographically widespread of the human malarias and its ability to cause relapsing infections can result in severe debilitating infections. The unique biology and resulting epidemiology of the parasite presented new challenges to estimating the global burden of disease not encountered in the Malaria Atlas Project’s similar work on Plasmodium falciparum. Accommodations had to be made for the influence of relapsing infections on both prevalence and incidence metrics used to estimate burden, as well as the relative paucity of P. vivax community survey data. This talk will summarize the steps taken to explore spatial relapse patterns and develop a model to relate endemicity and clinical disease to generate robust estimates of the P. vivax burden across a varied landscape of data quality and availability.
