This inaugural event of the new LSHTM Innovation Series features a fireside chat with Dr Annalisa Jenkins, Dr Precious Lunga and the Director of LSHTM, Prof Peter Piot. Our speakers will share their perspectives on what innovation means to them, how to create organisational cultures that inspire innovation, as well as personal reflections on how innovation has shaped their careers and the challenges they have faced along the way. In this informal conversation with Prof Piot there will be plenty of opportunities for Q &A with the audience.

About the speakers:

Dr Annalisa Jenkins is a life sciences thought leader with over 20 years of biopharmaceutical industry experience. She is the current CEO of PlaqueTec, pioneering the development of biomarker-based strategies to transform the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Coronary Artery Disease. Dr Jenkins served as president and CEO of Dimension Therapeutics, a leading gene therapy company that was acquired by Ultragenyx in November 2017. Prior leadership roles have included the head of Global Research and Development and executive vice president of Global Development and Medical Affairs at Merck Serono, and several senior positions at Bristol Myers-Squibb over 15 years, including head of Global Medical Affairs. Earlier in her career, Dr Jenkins was a medical officer in the British Royal Navy during the Gulf Conflict, achieving the rank of surgeon lieutenant commander. She also is a committee member of the Science Board to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and chairs or serves on the boards of a number of private and public biotech and life science companies. Dr Jenkins graduated with a degree in medicine from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital at the University of London and subsequently trained in cardiovascular medicine in the U.K. National Health Service.

Dr Precious Lunga is CEO and Co-Founder of Baobab Circle, a health technology company delivering innovative health solutions via phones across Africa. Previously she was at Econet Wireless where she co-founded the mHealth business unit using technology to deliver health services using mobile money micro-payments. Whilst at Econet she established a mobile health platform, which has attracted more than 750,000 paying customers within its first year of launch. Prior to that, she worked at UNAIDS Geneva where she was involved in spearheading the implementation of HIV prevention programs. She was also strategic advisor to the UK’s second largest charitable foundation, funding programs across Africa and India. As a vocal advocate for the right to health and education, Dr Lunga has succeeded in bringing together diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations, universities, and trial participants, who included approximately ten thousand African women in anti-HIV microbicide trials whilst she was at the UK Medical Research Council. Dr Lunga has been featured at the Women of the World festival and media programs including the BBC World Service Forum Programme and Sky News. 

Prof Peter Piot is the Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and Handa Professor of Global Health. He was the founding Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations (1995-2008). A clinician and microbiologist by training, he co-discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976, and subsequently led pioneering research on HIV/AIDS, women’s health and infectious diseases in Africa.
