Documentary: The Cost of Growth
Join us for a screening of documentary ‘The Cost of Growth’, followed by a debate on economic growth, climate policies and planetary limits
‘The Cost of Growth’ investigates the consequences of the EU’s climate policies in Serbia, Italy, and Sápmi (a cultural region covering parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, inhabited by the Sámi people). The documentary challenges the imperative of infinite economic growth on a planet with limited resources. It discusses the drivers of climate change and their links to economic growth.
The screening will be followed by a debate on climate policies guided by Dr Matt Gibson, LSHTM Research Fellow in Planetary Health. Audience members will be encouraged to share stories from their country and their lived experiences.
Speakers
Dr Matt Gibson
Matt is a Research Fellow in the Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health and recipient of the LSHTM-Stanford Fellowship in Planetary Health. His research broadly focuses on the ‘how’ of transformation towards healthy diets and sustainable, just food systems. Matt’s work aims to widen the analytical and narrative lens through which we imagine fundamental food systems change. Within this, his research explores questions surrounding social transformation, degrowth and post-growth, and commercial determinants of health. To explore these complex and contested domains he uses quantitative and qualitative approaches including scenario analysis, agent-based modelling, document analysis, food systems modelling, and elicitation techniques. Before joining LSHTM, Matt was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University working on the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission report. Matt completed his PhD at Imperial College London where his research examined approaches to food systems transformation.
