Climate change: Evidence of health impact and developing a climate-resilient future

Lecture on contemporary global health issues

Graphic with text - Global Health Lecture Series

Climate change is a growing global health issue. Dr Masselot will discuss his work on health impacts of heat and cold across Europe, and how does climate change influences these impacts. He will also talk about his advanced epidemiological modelling to address heated questions in an escalating climate crisis. Not only in Europe, but there has also been rising frequency and intensity of heatwaves in the UK and globally, which places many individuals at an increased risk of heat-related illness and is associated with excess mortality. In the UK, the population and the infrastructure are often not prepared for extreme heat which amplifies the risk further, particularly in vulnerable populations. Dr Marshall will discuss her upcoming work on understanding the physiological impact of climate change and heatwaves on these vulnerable populations and how it is central to enhancing the UK’s climate response and resilience.

Lastly, rapid progress is essential to build a healthier, more sustainable future in which the world is no longer dependent on burning fossil fuels and human societies can live within planetary limits. Achieving this requires transformative, cross-sectoral action to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve health at every level, from local to global. Dr Anton will also discuss about the Pathfinder Initiative which aims to accelerate a just transition to a healthy, net-zero future by generating evidence to guide policies and actions that benefit both climate and health.
