Nagasaki University Application & Admission fees 2026-27
- Application Fee: JPY 30,000
- Admission Fee: JPY 282,000
Applicants who pass the preliminary shortlisting will be invited for an interview. These applicants are required to pay the Nagasaki University application fee by 2 March 2026. Please note the followings and refer to the application guidance for payment instructions.
Applications will not be considered if Nagasaki University has not received a Transfer Payment Certificate confirming that the Application fee has been paid.
The application fee is not refundable except in the following circumstances:
The application fee was paid but the application documents were insufficient or they accidentally paid the application fee twice. In principle, the refund charge must be borne by the applicant and request for a refund must be made within 14 days from the last day of the application period.
The Nagasaki admission fee is for successful candidates who are accepted on the Joint PhD Programme. Details on how to pay will be given in the offer of admission letter.
LSHTM and Nagasaki University Tuition Fees
The table below shows the annual tuition fees for each University in their own currency. These are reviewed annually and subject to change. In order to calculate the full 2025/26 fee for the Joint PhD Programme, you will need to add together both. These fees are not covered by the funding for research grant or stipends described below. Further information on LSHTM’s tuition fees can be found here.
| 2026/27 | New students | Continuing students |
|---|---|---|
| Annual joint PhD tuition fees | ||
| LSHTM (year 1-3) | GBP 3,935 per year | GBP 3,710 per year |

* Full-time Continuing Students who started before 2026-27 pay the standard full-time tuition for the first 3 years, followed by a flat writing-up fee for year 4.
* Full-time New Students starting in 2026-27 or later pay the standard full-time tuition for the first 3 years. There is no tuition charge or writing-up fee for year 4.
Funding for research and living costs
Approximately five students will be accepted to the Joint PhD programme in 2026/27.
For all students offered a place, the student’s supervisory team will receive a Research Grant of up to JPY 2,000,000 per year (for the first two years and with a potential one-year extension) provided by Nagasaki University to support the research costs for the PhD project.
Additionally, the top two or three scoring students in the selection process, will be offered financial support towards their living costs. This funding is provided by Nagasaki University and will be similar to previous years (at least JPY 200,000 per month per student for the first two years and with a potential one-year extension).
Of note, the stipend is the same whether the student is based in Nagasaki or in London. However, living costs are much higher in London than in Nagasaki and the stipend provided is substantially lower than the UKRI and other UK based studentships. The stipend should therefore be considered only a contribution towards living costs in London. For further information about living costs in London, please refer to our study with us section, and in particular the cost of living section.
These funding packages do NOT cover the Nagasaki University application or admission fees, nor the tuition fees for either university. Students are responsible for paying all these fees themselves.
All applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to apply for other funding opportunities that cover living costs and/or tuition fees. Please note that the awardees of the Nagasaki WISE stipend cannot receive other stipend. Further information can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Fee & Funding section below; funding available for current LSHTM students; and the Nagasaki Centre for Japanese Language and Foreign Exchange. In addition, the awardees of the financial support towards living costs who have residential status in Japan are required to file on income tax return.
