I am a Molecular Virologist that has been working in HIV research since 2003. I received my PhD at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda in 2012 where I investigated HIV superinfection and disease progression in female sex workers in Uganda. I am currently an Assistant Director of Research and Head of department at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, I am a Principal Research Scientist and head of the genomics and sequencing platform at the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and Assistant Professor at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I lecture at Makerere University in Virology and Bioinformatics courses including student supervision as part of the Unit's mandate to contribute to capacity building locally and internationally.

Teaching
I am currently part of the faculty at Makerere University on the Graduate (MSC and PhD) courses in Bioinformatics. I lead the design of the course modules on ‘Online Bioinformatics and Sequence Databases’ and ‘Phylogenetic analysis’ which I am currently teaching and examining. I organize and teach at the annual Uganda Virus Research Institute ‘Bioinformatics in the Tropics’ course. The course is open to participants from across Africa where students are encouraged to bring their data to be supported with their analyses. I continue to teach on other courses organized in Uganda and internationally through invitations from our collaborators.
Research
My research work involves the study of the virological and immunological correlates of HIV-1 superinfection, a phenomenon where HIV infected individuals become infected with other HIV strains following re-exposure to HIV. This work involves the use of next generation sequencing with phylogenetic analysis to determine HIV-1 superinfection and neutralization assays to determine the development of neutralizing antibodies prior to and after superinfection. My other research interests include studies on HIV-1 drug resistance and molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 in Uganda and the region. I am involved in H3ABionet, a network tasked to develop bioinformatics capacity in Africa. With colleagues at Makerere University, I am involved in the BRecA (Bioinformatics Research Capacity in Africa project) that is establishing sustainable programs at Makerere University to produce a critical mass of Bioinformaticians. Working with colleagues and Abbott diagnostics we are using metagenomics approaches to study pathogen discovery to address the emerging and re-emerging pathogens in Uganda and the region.
