Kamal is a Research Fellow at LSHTM, Department of Public Health, Environments and Society. He has worked across environmental and public health research, including air and noise pollution, exposure assessment and health risk modelling, applying statistical and geospatial methods to policy-relevant questions on air quality and health.
Kamal currently works on research investigating the health and equity impacts of planning deregulation, focusing on the case of permitted development housing in England. He also contributes to the Camden Breathing Better project, funded by Reckitt, developing future scenarios for cleaner air and healthier lives in Camden, and to ATMOPOLIS, an EU-funded project developing an integrated tool to evaluate the health and climate impacts of air and noise pollution mitigation policies across five European cities.
Kamal is also involved in Policy and Implementation for Climate & Health Equity (PAICE), a collaborative project between UCL and LSHTM, in partnership with the UK Climate Change Committee and the Greater London Authority, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Within PAICE, he contributes to modelling the health and cross-sectoral impacts of active travel policy, as part of the project's wider work assessing how UK Net Zero policy measures across the transport, housing, energy and food sectors affect population health and health inequalities.
Before joining LSHTM, Kamal held postdoctoral research positions at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA; Northumbria University and Newcastle University, UK; and the University of Hong Kong. His research there covered chemical transport modelling, wildland fire and industrial emissions, and the health impacts of air pollution across urban and industrial regions in the US, UK, India and China, including a HEI and NASA-funded modelling study on wildland fire and oil & gas emissions in US.

Kamal has taught and supervised across postgraduate environmental science and public health programmes in the UK, US and India, spanning course delivery, graduate teaching support, and student supervision.
- Environmental Health Policy (PHM206), LSHTM — contributes to policy development teaching, with a focus on air quality policy in China; involved in assessment moderation to ensure consistency and fairness across student evaluations
- Environmental Engineering Principles, Georgia Institute of Technology — Instructor (Fall 2023), teaching atmospheric chemistry and air pollution health risk; also served as Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Teaching Associate on the same course

Research
Kamal is an environmental data scientist with a focus on air and noise pollution, and their impact on human health. His research encompasses environmental and public health studies, including the health and equity impacts of urban and planning policy, applying statistical, geospatial and chemical transport modelling methods. Specifically, his interests include:
