LSHTM runners break all records raising £16,470 running the London Landmarks Half Marathon

Imogen Sharp (PhD student, LSHTM) and Martin Lewy (Imogen’s husband), this year’s top fundraisers, prepare for the LLHM at the start line on 7 April 2024.

Another April in London marks another hugely successful and exhilarating London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM), in which 18 LSHTM runners took part, raising a record-breaking £16,470 helping remove the barriers to education for the brightest and best students via the LSHTM Scholarship Fund, the Jeroen Ensink Memorial Fund, the Student Financial Support Fund, and supporting The Gate Clinic at MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine via The Gambia Patient Access Fund.

It was a mild 16 degrees Celsius, and the winds were forecast to blow at 40mph as 25,000 LLHM 2024 runners prepared to take on the streets of London on a blustery but warm Spring day. Many thousands of runners raised money for the causes they care about, including removing the barriers to education at LSHTM.

Wearing branded LSHTM running vests, our inspiring runners completed the 13.1 mile run on Sunday, 7 April 2024, taking their training and fundraising to epic heights for 2024, helping make this event LSHTM’s most successful community fundraising event on record. LSHTM staff, former students and friends stood at mile 11.8 to cheer our team of runners onto the finish line, disbursing high fives and plenty of encouragement as they headed towards the finish line.

Thank you

We are extremely proud of our LLHM 2024 team, consisting of an energetic, hard-working and dedicated team of LSHTM staff, students, alumni and friends of LSHTM. The team have helped raise more funds than ever for an event like this at LSHTM, exceeding their target by a truly phenomenal 270% in 2024.

Initially aiming to raise £6,000, it became clear early on that this year's team had a little extra fundraising magic up their sleeves. By sharing their training journey and JustGiving fundraising pages with their networks, and through their energy, enthusiasm and passion, our team were able to go way above and beyond their expectations. We are delighted to announce our top three LLHM 2024 fundraisers this year are:

  1. Imogen Sharp & Martin Lewy (joint 1st place) – raising £3,773
  2. Heather Ingold – raising £1,746

I also really appreciated the amazing support and motivation from Sarah Enderby Coles, LSHTM's Regular Giving Officer in the Development and Alumni Relations Office.’

You’ve raised how much?

Our Cambridge Half Marathon team, 10 LSHTM runners who ran a half marathon in March 2024, has now raised an impressive £4,536. This is alongside repeat community fundraiser Abi Sakande, who took on the full Brighton Marathon this April dressed as a toilet and raised £3,761 in memory of his mum, LSHTM professor Val Curtis, a passionate WASH specialist and well-loved LSHTM staff member.

Once the totals of these events and the London Landmarks Half Marathon are combined, our teams of LSHTM Community Fundraisers have now raised a truly incredible £24,763 from these three events so far this year. Your fantastic work truly humbles us – thank you!

What’s next?

You can join our team of LSHTM cyclists on 15 September to ride 55 miles from London to Brighton. Register your interest now to join our record-breaking team.
