2023-24 Doctoral Project Travelling Scholarships

Current research degree students at LSHTM are invited to apply for competitive funding support for their doctoral projects or DrPH RSII/thesis.

These awards are to support substantial periods of study in the destination country.

GBP 55,000.00 is available for award from LSHTM’s endowment funds. Successful candidates will be made awards of between GBP 500.00 and GBP 5,000.00.

Due to the source of some of the funds available, some preference may be given to applications for visits to low or lower-middle income countries.

Eligibility for funding

Applicants must be registered for a DrPH or PhD programme at LSHTM for the current academic year. LSHTM must be the student’s primary institution (the final degree to be issued will be awarded by LSHTM).

As this funding is intended for doctoral projects, any award will only be paid once students have submitted final confirmation of upgrading or DrPH Review to the Scholarships team in Registry.

Where appropriate, ethics approval must be obtained (LSHTM and local) and will need to be submitted to the Scholarships Team in Registry before any funding can be released.

All those in receipt of a Research Degree Travelling Scholarship award must follow the policy, guidance and requirements of LSHTM (including LSHTM travel insurance), UK FCDO, and destination government, at the time of proposed and actual travel.

How to apply

Applicants must submit, in a single email to the Scholarships team:

  • a completed 2023-24 Current Research Degree Students’ Scholarship Application Form (.xls) Please complete all four tabs of the excel document (Application Form, Project Outline, Budget, and Timetable):
    • The budget should provide a full list of projected costs for the research project, and include justification for the costs. Please highlight which costs are to be covered by the scholarship, as well as show details of how other costs will be covered.

Usually awards are only made towards the cost of travel and accommodation, but - depending on the funds available - it may be possible to consider a contribution to other project expenses and therefore a fully costed budget is required.

Applications will be assessed on the merit of the project. Documentation provided will be scrutinised for feasibility and reasonable economy.

Incomplete applications will not be considered for this funding.

All applications will only be reviewed and processed after the deadline. All applications that are submitted before the deadline will be considered equally, regardless of submission date.

By submitting an application for this funding applicants agree to its Terms & Conditions.

The deadline for receipt of complete applications is 23:59 (BST) on Monday 6 May 2024.
