Social Sciences

Social science is embedded across all research at the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, offering vital insights into the social, cultural, political, and economic factors that influence health. Our crosscutting social science work enhances the relevance, ethics, and impact of research by ensuring it is grounded in the lived experiences of communities.

Our multidisciplinary team supports studies across platforms by designing and implementing qualitative and mixed-methods research, leading community engagement strategies, and addressing ethical, gender, and equity considerations. This work helps shape study design, improve participant recruitment and retention, and strengthen the use of research evidence in policy and practice.

We collaborate with communities, policymakers, and stakeholders to understand perceptions of health, illness, and care, and to explore the broader systems that affect health outcomes. Whether informing vaccine acceptability, understanding stigma in HIV care, or exploring the socio-political dimensions of epidemics, our social scientists play a central role in bridging science and society.

We also invest in capacity building through training, mentorship, and partnerships with academic and community-based institutions, both nationally and globally.
