Statistics team- Entebbe

The Statistics and Data Section plays a central role in the design, implementation, and analysis of the Unit’s research. From the early stages of concept development and funding applications, through to study design, data collection, and final analysis, the team ensures statistical rigor and data integrity across all research activities. Findings are shared through peer-reviewed publications, national and international conference presentations, and policy engagement.

As part of the section’s growth, a robust Data Management Platform has been established. This platform has evolved from early systems such as DBase III/IV, EpiInfo, and MS Access, to modern, Good Clinical Practice (GCP)-compliant tools including OpenClinica, Open Data Kit (ODK), and REDCap—systems that are ready for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance. This transition from paper-based to electronic data capture has significantly improved data quality, security, and efficiency.

With ongoing mentorship from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the platform has strengthened the Unit’s position as a Statistical and Data Coordinating Centre for large-scale, multi-country studies and clinical trials, enhancing both North-South and South-South collaborations.

The section is actively building capacity in advanced areas such as mathematical modelling and bioinformatics. It also undertakes its own research initiatives, including contributions to the ALPHA Network and complex model calibration studies.

As a regional leader in capacity building, the section offers short courses in medical statistics, epidemiology, and data management. Several senior staff also contribute to teaching at LSHTM, further strengthening academic links.

The platform also oversees the Unit’s Archives, responsible for the secure storage and retrieval of clinical, social science, administrative, and financial records.
