Welcome statement

Welcome to MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (MRCG at LSHTM).

Professor Ed Clarke

For almost 80 years, we have worked alongside communities, researchers, health professionals, policymakers and funders to improve health and save lives. The Unit has played a leading role in some of Africa’s most influential scientific discoveries, and I am honoured to lead an institution with such a remarkable legacy. Beginning with a focus to significantly reduce the burden of disease, our future holds even greater hope as we leverage innovation and technology to transform health research in the region.

Today, the world faces complex and evolving health challenges. Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, climate change, demographic shifts, food insecurity and growing health inequalities require innovative research and strong partnerships. As an Africa-based centre of excellence, MRCG is uniquely positioned to address these challenges through quality science that delivers both discovery and real-world impact.

Our ambition is to build on our strengths while positioning the Unit to respond to future global health priorities. We will continue to invest in scientific excellence, strengthen collaborations across Africa and internationally, and ensure that our research remains relevant to the needs of the communities we serve.

"We are committed to nurturing the next generation of African scientists and research leaders, recognising that sustainable progress depends on developing local talent and expertise."

Our partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine provides a unique platform to combine world-class research, education and capacity strengthening. Together, we are creating opportunities for researchers, students and partners to contribute to solutions that improve health across The Gambia, West Africa and beyond.

At the heart of our success are our people and our communities. The dedication of our staff, students, participants and partners continues to drive our achievements. By fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, inclusion and innovation, we seek to ensure that MRCG remains a trusted scientific centre for decades to come.

Thank you for your interest in our work. We look forward to working with partners old and new as we continue our mission to improve health and save lives through research.
