What is your role at MRCG?
I serve as a scientific officer within the Malaria Population Biology group under the leadership of Professor Alfred Ngwa.
Could you share some insights into your current project?
My present project involves the exploration of new Plasmodium falciparum phenotypic assays, as well as genomic and transcriptomic analyses to determine the frequency and mechanisms of P. falciparum tolerance to current Antimalarial Combination Therapy drugs.
How did you initially embark on your journey in malaria research?
During my final year at university, I undertook a six-week summer internship focused on determining the phylogeny of repeated malaria infections. This experience ignited my interest in addressing malaria in Africa, emphasizing the crucial importance of contributing to its elimination.
Could you describe the work environment at the Malaria Centre?
I am currently based at MRCG, and I have the privilege of collaborating with a diverse team of researchers who share a common goal of making groundbreaking contributions to save lives and improve health.
Where is your hometown?
I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, but I have origins in The Gambia, where I am presently based.
What were your childhood aspirations?
As a child, I was determined to improve people's health, although I was certain that I didn't want to become a doctor. I believe I'm on the right path to achieving that goal.
What's the most enjoyable aspect of working with your team?
Working among a highly dedicated group, the readiness of everyone to offer guidance and support instills a strong sense of belonging within the team.
Beyond work, what are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy cooking and exploring diverse international cuisines. In my spare time, I find myself engrossed in reading personal development books.
What do you find yourself doing when you're not working?
Given the demanding nature of our work, I prioritize spending quality time with my family and exploring the beautiful sights of The Gambia.
Where do you envision yourself post-PhD?
I envision myself playing a pivotal role in forging connections between management strategies and research initiatives, serving as a catalyst for streamlined collaboration and synergy between these two essential components.
