What is your role at MRC Gambia?

I am a Scientific Officer at the Malaria Population Biology Laboratory at MRC Unit The Gambia. I conduct research to enhance our understanding of malaria. My responsibilities include performing high-precision microscopy, drug resistance assays, and molecular diagnostics such as DNA sequencing and genotyping of malaria parasites. I also train staff and students, work with diverse teams to plan and conduct experiments, analyse data, oversee quality control procedures, manage lab operations, and contribute to the publication of impactful scientific articles.

Tell us a bit about your current project.

I am involved in projects that examine the genetic interactions between human populations and malaria parasites. These projects aim to understand how these interactions affect the outcome of malaria infections in different environmental settings across Africa.

What were your childhood aspirations?

To become a medical doctor.

Beyond work, what are your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy creating art, including applying makeup and painting, using my skills and creative imagination.

What is next?

I have been awarded the UK Government Chevening Scholarship for the 2024/2025 academic year to pursue a one-year MSc program in Global Health Infection and Immunity at St. George’s University of London in the UK. This program will enhance my ability to contribute effectively to our ongoing and future projects.
