My research explores factors influencing the implementation and effectiveness of vaccines. I am currently the co-lead of Theme 1 (Making the most of real-world data) for the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Immunisation at LSHTM. In collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency, our work seeks to harness electronic health record data to improve vaccine coverage and drive evidence-based policy in the UK.

Alongside my work in electronic health records, I am co-director of LSHTM’s Vaccine Centre and hold a position at LSHTM’s Department of Clinical Research, where I run several projects exploring the link between the gut microbiome and oral vaccine response in low-income settings. This includes a project comparing virome development among newborns in the UK and Malawi funded by a UKRI IMPRINT network pump-priming award.

I am interested in the visualisation and communication of data, and led the development of LSHTM’s COVID-19 vaccine tracker from April 2020 to August 2022. In late 2021, I acted as a consultant for the COVID-19 Working Group of the WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization.

I am a keen but sporadic science writer. My popular science writing has been published The Guardian, The Independent, Science-based Medicine and The Conversation, and I was shortlisted and highly commended for the 2014 Max Perutz science writing award.
