The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine has been ranked top university in Europe for research impact in all fields (ahead of Oxford and Cambridge) in the 2015 CWTS Leiden Ranking.
The School is also ranked 6th overall in the world for impact based on the top 1% of published papers in all fields (after MIT, Harvard, Caltech, Stanford and Berkeley), 3rd in the world for biomedical and health sciences (after only MIT and Caltech) and 5th in the world overall for collaborative research.
This is an improvement on previous years. The Leiden Ranking ranks 750 leading universities worldwide by number of academic publications according to the volume and citation impact of the publications at those institutions.
The School is now highly rated in a number of world rankings. In November 2014, it was ranked 91st of all universities in the world by US News Best Global Universities Rankings. In the four subject rankings in which it appeared, it ranked #26 in clinical medicine, 17th in immunology, 42nd in microbiology, and 3rd in the world, after Harvard and Johns Hopkins, for social science and public health.
In May 2014, the School was rated in the top 10 of all universities both for citation rate and for top cited publications by the new EU-supported U-Multirank database. It was placed top of a table of the world's leading research-focused graduate schools published by the Times Higher Education in October 2013. As well as achieving the best overall score, the School scored highly on individual indicators including international outlook, research and citations.
Professor Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "As the world continues to face complex health and development challenges, the relevance and importance of the School's work grows. Reputation has an elusive quality, however it is good to see the School's global reputation as a centre of excellence for research, teaching and learning is reflected in these rankings."
The School does not appear in some mainstream rankings, as it does not have undergraduate teaching. However, it does score highly in other rankings based on citation metrics. Details of publications, open access repository, citation maps and impact are on the School's Research webpages
