Mentorship in the field of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

In this talk, we will discuss our mentorship experiences in the field of sexually transmitted infections, successful mentorship programmes conducted outside of this field that may be modified to support the next generation of STI researchers, and valuable concepts in mentoring relationships. This talk will include a facilitated discussion around the factors and approaches useful in an STI mentorship programme.

Alison Footman, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Alison Footman graduated in April 2022 with a PhD in Health Behavior and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the HPV Cancer Prevention Program. Her research focuses on exploring attitudes about current and future vaccines to prevent STIs.  

Stacey Griner, University of North Texas Health Science Center

Stacey Griner (she/her) graduated in 2019 with a PhD in Public and is a tenure-track faculty member at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in the School of Public Health. Her research uses dissemination and implementation science approaches to develop and implement innovative strategies to address multilevel barriers to STI screening. 

Barbara Van Der Pol, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Dr Barbara Van Der Pol is a Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Director of the UAB STD Diagnostics Laboratory. She has been active in the field of the biology, epidemiology and diagnostics of sexually transmitted infections (STI) for 40 years.  Her behavioral research focuses on delivery, utilisation and implementation of new diagnostic technologies. Dr Van Der Pol currently serves as the President of the International Society for STD Research.
