Immune-mediated control of Toxoplasma gondii in human cells

Toxoplasma gondii infects 30 percent of the world’s population, yet no countermeasures for humans exist. Infection leads to the rapid production of interferon gamma (IFNg), a proinflammatory cytokine that upregulates host defence mechanisms.

The Frickel lab studies the actions of IFN-gamma-mediated ubiquitin- and guanylate binding protein (GBP)-driven mechanisms that target Toxoplasma in various human cells. To aid our discoveries, we have developed an automated artificial-intelligence driven image analysis pipeline that can robustly classify host-Toxoplasma interplay.
