Co-production and peer research on mental health and human rights in Africa

This webinar is to celebrate Human Rights Day 2021 with our theme of co-production and peer research on mental health and human rights in Africa from the SUCCEED research project, a collaboration between teams of researchers in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and the UK. The project’s aim is to co-produce research and influence policy focusing on psychosocial disabilities affecting the most severely disabled and excluded in the poorest communities of sub-Saharan Africa.

This year’s Human Rights Day takes the theme of ‘Equality-Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights’. This year’s theme relates to 'Equality' and Article 1 of the UDHR – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

During this session, the speakers will explore how co-production in research on mental health can contribute to improving human rights in Africa, with key messages from SUCCEED (Support, Comprehensive Care and Empowerment of People with Psychosocial Disabilities in Sub-Saharan Africa)peer researchers in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The session will also include what the SUCCEED research project has been working on over the past year and the involvement people with lived experience and various community based disabled people’s organisations have in our co-production process.
