Miss Nina van der Mark

Research Fellow

United Kingdom

I am a Research Fellow working on conflicts of interest in the delivery and quality of private healthcare provision in Pakistan.

Prior to joining LSHTM, I was a Research Associate at the Chatham House Centre for Universal Health. My primary focus was on the political economy of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) reforms in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), with main projects in Bangladesh and Nigeria. I have also worked in International Development at Options Consultancy Services, with a focus on Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health and Health Financing. In between, I briefly worked for the private sector as a market research consultant on healthcare technology in South-East Asia.

I have a multidisciplinary background with an MSc in Population and Development from The London School of Economics (LSE) and a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences, focused on international relations, international law, and China studies from University College Utrecht.

Teaching

I will be the co-Module organizer for 1503 - Globalisation and Health in 2023/2024.

Research

My main research interests include:

• Commercial determinants of health

• Qualitative research on the private healthcare sector in South Asia

• The Political Economy of UHC and health reforms in LMICs

• Global SRHR policy and politics and national impacts

I am currently working on a project investigating conflicts of interest in the private healthcare sector in Pakistan, led by LSHTM and the Aga Khan University, Karachi. The project, funded by the UK Medical Research Council applies innovative methods, such as a novel standardised pharmaceutical sales representative (SPSR) method, in which field researchers simulate pharmaceutical marketing with GPs.

Before LSHTM, I worked in UHC policy research and engagement in multilateral institutions and with national governments in South Asia and Nigeria. In Bangladesh, our situational analysis on UHC in Bangladesh and policy options were quoted in national media. I have worked on projects with UNICEF ROSA, UNICEF Bangladesh, WHO and UHC2030, including a global review on the State of UHC Commitment. I have also contributed to the Chatham House Commission on Universal Health and was a steering group member for London Global Cancer Week between 2019-2022.
