Can you please tell us a bit about your current work/research?

I am now retired but am a non-executive director of Public Health Wales and Deputy Chair of GambleAware amongst other voluntary activity.

How does it feel to have been part of the New Years Honours List? What were you awarded for?

I was very thrilled to be awarded CBE for  voluntary and charitable services, particularly during Covid-19- which included working with the media as well as with my local community and general practice and continuing my roles with PHE, PHW and GambleAware.

What were some of your favourite professional achievements?

President of UK Faculty of Public Health 2001-4; Co-chair of Hong Kong government’s SARS Inquiry in 2003, followed by appointment in 2005 as Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Associate Director of PHE and Chair of PHE Global Health Committee  and now non executive director of PH Wales.

What course and year did you study at LSHTM?

MSc Community Medicine, 1982.

Why did you choose to study with LSHTM?

It was part of my public health training.

Did you have to overcome any challenges to study with us?     

Looking after 2 small children at the same time as studying full time!

What were your favourite memories from your studies with us?          

The international mix of students.

How has your LSHTM degree helped you in your career?

It provided a good foundation for future work and study.

What would you like to achieve in future?       

Continue to contribute to my professional and local communities.

Do you have any advice for students/recent graduates?

Enjoy your time studying at LSHTM and make the most of the opportunities it offers especially international links.
