Our social communities on Discord, Facebook and WhatsApp are intended for LSHTM to get to know each other, share tips and advice before and during their studies and plan social events.
In order to maintain a welcoming environment for all users, your participation in these groups must always be respectful of others. Our guidelines below outline how you can help to build a positive, constructive online space for everyone:
- Be considerate – do not post content that is libellous, defamatory, harassing, threatening or inflammatory.
- Keep on topic – our Discord and Facebook groups have a number of discussion threads, so please make sure you only post content related to the thread in question. If you would like to start discussion on a new topic, let us know and we'll set up the new thread.
- Respect differences – respect others' cultural, religious, professional, academic and economic backgrounds, skills, abilities and contributions. Do not use obscenities or profanity, and do not express hatred or intolerance for people on the basis of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender or gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, age or disability.
- Respect each other's privacy – do not repeatedly send messages or requests to other people, and do not use or reproduce others' comments or personal information without their express permission.
- Disagree with the comment, not the person – disagreements can happen but remember to focus on the matter under discussion and avoid negative comments about other people.
- Use emojis and gifs to show emotions – emotions can easily be misinterpreted online when you can't see the person's face or body language. Be mindful that people may not realise when you are joking, and one person's joke may be offensive to others. You should always be aware of the receivers of your message, especially when posting in such a diverse community.
- Examinations and assessments should not be discussed – refrain from any discussions about assessments while those are being administered.
- Double check advice – while we encourage you to share advice and tips with each other, please bear in mind that every LSHTM student has an individual set of circumstances and their requirements may differ. If you're not sure about something, please do check with the relevant team at LSHTM. If you don't know who to contact, email [email protected] and we'll point you in the right direction.
