Student profile: Fundamentals to Clinical Trials (CTM101)

CTM101: Fundamentals to Clinical Trials support early-career development and strengthen trial delivery capacity in your Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).

Meet Aisha – Clinical Trials Coordinator

Aisha has recently started her role as a Clinical Trials Coordinator in a busy Clinical Trials Unit. Her responsibilities include supporting the setup and coordination of multi-centre trials, communicating with research sites, managing trial documentation, and tracking recruitment and data collection.

As she settles into her role, Aisha is keen to develop a stronger understanding of the wider clinical trial process; how trials are designed, how regulations apply, and how her day-to-day work fits into the broader trial lifecycle. Like many new staff in CTUs, she is learning on the job but would benefit from structured, high-quality training to build confidence and effectiveness early on.

CTM101: Fundamentals to Clinical Trials, offered by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, provides an ideal foundation for staff like Aisha. Designed for those new to clinical trials, this flexible, Level 7 module offers comprehensive training in key trial concepts and practice, delivered through highly flexible, distance learning.

By completing this module, Aisha will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of clinical trial design, including randomisation, blinding, and the use of placebos
  • Gain insight into key considerations such as trial size, alternative designs, and observational studiesLearn how to interpret and report trial results, including issues related to multiplicity, subgroup analyses, and multiple outcomes
  • Strengthen her ability to monitor trial progress and contribute to high-quality trial conduct
  • Apply this knowledge to support robust, ethical, and efficient trial delivery within their CTU

CTM101: Fundamentals to Clinical Trials offers CTUs a practical, scalable solution for building trial delivery capacity and supporting the development of early-career staff.

We would welcome the opportunity to work with your CTU to support your training needs and explore how our clinical trials modules might align with your workforce development plans.
