Student profile: Data Monitoring and Interim Analysis (CTM206)

CTM206: Data Monitoring and Interim Analysis helps develop data monitoring expertise and trial oversight capacity within your CTU.

Meet Priya – Senior Trials Advisor preparing for DMC responsibilities

Priya is an experienced senior member of staff within her Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). Over the years, she has contributed to the development and delivery of numerous trials and is now increasingly being asked to serve in oversight roles, particularly as a member of Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs).

While Priya brings extensive operational and strategic experience, she recognises that serving on a DMC requires a specific understanding of interim data analysis, stopping rules, safety monitoring, and the statistical principles underpinning adaptive trial oversight. To contribute effectively in this new capacity, she is seeking formal, advanced training that bridges her practical experience with the technical and governance aspects of DMC responsibilities.

CTM206: Data Monitoring and Interim Analysis, offered by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, is designed for senior trial professionals like Priya. This Level 7 module provides applied training in the statistical and practical considerations of interim monitoring, helping prepare participants to confidently interpret interim data and contribute meaningfully to trial oversight, delivered through highly flexible, distance learning.

By completing this module, Priya will be able to:

  • Understand the role and function of Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs) within clinical trials
  • Explain the principles and importance of interim data analysis for trial integrity and patient safety
  • Apply statistical stopping guidelines and understand their implications in both early and late-stage trials
  • Navigate the operational and governance aspects of DMCs, including committee conduct and decision-making processes
  • Critically assess the ethical and practical considerations surrounding interim analyses and adaptive trial designs

CTM206 provides CTUs with a strategic opportunity to equip senior staff with the oversight and analytical skills needed to guide complex trials and uphold trial integrity at the highest level.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss how CTM206 and our wider portfolio can support your CTU’s senior leadership development.
