Integrating education initiatives within Ghana’s national nutrition framework

Two black children eat lunch at school from colourful bowls

A new blog by Dr Albert Kwansa and Dr Robert Akparibo, co-Chair of our Nutrition Community of Practice, explores how Ghana is integrating education into its national nutrition strategy, as highlighted in the Learn to Eat Well report from the GEM Report and the Research Consortium. From behaviour change communication campaigns to school feeding programmes and agricultural training, Ghana’s multifaceted approach aims to improve nutrition outcomes by embedding knowledge and healthy practices across communities, schools, and generations.

The piece highlights how school-based interventions have led to cognitive gains among students—especially girls—and how maternal education and community engagement are critical levers for progress. While challenges remain, Ghana’s example underscores the value of education as a powerful driver for long-term nutritional and development outcomes.
