MRC Festival – Kevin Opondo presents on Mosquito Survival

He has keen interest in understanding how insecticide resistance impacts malaria transmission and elimination. Kevin holds a PhD in Tropical Medicine - Entomology/Epidemiology, from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). He previously spent two years working at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Tanzania as part of his MSc training investigating how mosquito behaviour affects the design and development of mosquito sampling tools. Kevin is interested in the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to guide malaria control strategies and in simplified communication of science to policy makers, to enable evidence-based decision making.
At the MRC Festival, Kevin will present on the topic Mosquito Survival. Malaria remains a serious challenge for human development, costing about 450,000 lives in 2016 alone and over US $2.7 billion for its control in 2016. There is tremendous effort to eliminate the disease but the efforts are challenged by the emergence and spread of insecticide resistance within malaria vectors.
The impact of insecticide resistance on malaria transmission and elimination is poorly understood.
