Working for MSF: Experiences from the field

Claire Reading, Emiko Nakayama and Osama Mohsen will deliver a panel discussion entitled 'Working for MSF: Experiences from the field'.

The LSHTM Friends of Medecins sans Frontieres are proud to announce our first big event of the year, a panel discussion regarding experiences of individual medical professionals from having worked for MSF in the field.

Many of us have heard about MSF, and the work they do, and some of us may have even thought about working for MSF one day. Whilst working for MSF can be exciting and rewarding, the work can also be difficult especially when working in foreign countries in sometimes hostile situations with only limited resources. To help shed light on what life is like in the field we are proud to be hosting 3 medical professionals, currently studying at the school, who will be sharing their experiences of working for MSF and the reality of working in the field. They will be discussing their own stories from working on missions, as well as talking about how students can gear themselves towards working for MSF one day.

Firstly, Claire Reading who has worked for MSF as a midwife and will be detailing the differences between working in the UK and working for MSF in the field. She will also be discussing cultural differences regarding a woman’s ability to consent to medical interventions, whilst also detailing life as an expatriate in the field. Emiko Nakayama will be bringing a range of stories from her various missions ranging from her work in Iraq and Afghanistan to her work during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Finally rounding out the panel will be Osama Mohsen, a doctor who has worked for MSF in Egypt and brings with him a host of stories about his experience in the region.

We welcome you to bring with you any questions you have for our panel, and we hope to see many of you there!
