Successfully tackling the structural drivers of HIV
STRIVE pre-conference session at AIDS2018
After seven years of research on the structural drivers of HIV, the STRIVE research consortium – with co-hosts UKaid/DFID, UNAIDS, UNDP and SRHR Africa Trust – gather policy makers, implementers, civil society advocates, funding agencies and researchers for a unique day of debate and exchange.
The full-day session is divided into two parts, as we discuss how to address structural drivers in order to:
- achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs)
- deliver comprehensive HIV prevention programmes
Drawing on this evidence and experience, panellists and participants address burning questions for the AIDS response:
- What works to tackle the structural drivers of HIV?
- How can evidence inform policy-making and programme implementation?
Impact on the sexual health of adolescent girls and young women is a specific focus of both panel discussions. Themes related to HIV risk will include:
- Harmful alcohol use
- Gender inequality
- Social norms
- Intimate partner violence
- Stigma
- Transactional sex
The session is designed to produce practical, evidence based recommendations for policy and practice.
WHY?
The structural drivers of HIV are central to any work on the epidemic – and STRIVE’s session offers a unique opportunity at AIDS2018 to engage with the latest evidence, analysis and interventions.
