Nick Black will deliver this talk entitled 'Relman revisited: the dawn of the era of systems and creativity'.
Nick Black is Professor of Health Services Research at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. His main research interests are methods of assessing the quality of care (particularly surgery and dementia care), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and the history of health services.
In 1988 Arnold Relman, editor of the NEJM, heralded the start of the third post-war era devoted to achieving equitable, affordable health care of satisfactory quality. In his lecture, Nick Black will suggest that, despite the achievements over the past 70 years of all three era, a much needed fourth era is dawning that focuses on systems and creativity. Health services research has a key role in supporting and promoting the new era.
