Lessons learnt from human papillomavirus vaccine delivery
Lessons learnt from human papillomavirus vaccine delivery in low and middle-income countries
Eligible low and middle-income countries (LMICs) can request human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine support from Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance. This project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, synthesised lessons learnt and determinants of success for vaccine delivery from 66 HPV vaccine demonstration projects and 12 national programmes in 45 LMICs and one high-income country.Projects and programmes were supported by the GARDASIL® Access Program, Gavi, and PATH amongst others.
A systematic review of available literature was supplemented by key informant interviews with country representatives. School-based vaccine delivery alongside strategies to reach out-of-school girls were the most successful. Vaccine acceptance rates were high. Early engagement of teachers was particularly valuable. Refusals were almost always based on negative media exposure linking the vaccine to sterility and rumours were similar across projects and programmes. Lessons were generally consistent across countries and dissemination of these could improve and accelerate HPV vaccine introduction.
