Integrating environmental sustainability & health in the Anthropocene era
Side Event at UNEA 2 - Planetary health- integrating environmental sustainability and health in the Anthropocene era
The Rockefeller Foundation – Lancet Commission on Planetary Health assessed the scale of the threats to human health and development posed by the multiple environmental changes occurring in the Anthropocene era. The Commission’s July 2015 report makes the case for the transformation of global health into a discipline that integrates knowledge of how underpinning Earth systems influence the broader determinants of health; and, puts forward research recommendations along with evidence-based, integrated policy solutions that address environmental sustainability together with human health and development.
The goals of the proposed side event at UNEA 2 are to share the report findings with a wider audience; to introduce the Planetary Health Alliance and new opportunities for engagement on science and science policy; and, to continue the dialogue with UNEP and representatives of national governments on how the Commission’s findings can inform policy and practice in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals
The expected audience for the event will be delegates and UNEA 2 participants interested in understanding better why health considerations should be integrated into environmental policy, what the science and gaps are, and how to bridge science to policy at appropriate scales for a healthier planet and healthier people.
