Host – pathogen interactions in experimental Escherichia coli K1 neonatal systemic infection

Abstract

Clones of E. coli K1 are major neonatal pathogens responsible for early stage neonatal sepsis and neonatal meningitis.

Bacteria colonise the gut during or shortly after birth and transit to the meninges by way of the blood circulation.

Many features of the human infection can be replicated in the neonatal rat, most importantly the strong age-dependency that characterises susceptibility to infection. I describe the anatomical, immunological and physiological status of the susceptible host and the gene products of the pathogen involved in gastrointestinal colonisation and survival in blood.
