The HIV epidemic in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - lessons learnt

Gita Ramjee PhD FRCPE is a Chief Specialist Scientist and Director of the South African Medical Research Council’s HIV Prevention Research Unit. She holds an Honorary Professorship from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, as well as Clinical Professorship at the University of Washington.

Dr Ramjee specializes in HIV prevention and treatment research with integrated care programmes among women and men in communities around the greater Durban area in South Africa. As the Clinical Trials Unit Principal Investigator, she has had oversight of an expansive portfolio of phase I through phase III HIV prevention and treatment clinical trials. She is a member of several local and international committees and advisory groups including the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC).
