Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting (GATHER) is taking a step forward in improving the science of population health measurement. During the MDG era there has been a proliferation of global estimates to track population health and guide investment. Differing measurement methods present challenges that may not be addressed by statistical modelling techniques alone and these estimates can be contentious.

GATHER comprises a checklist of 18 items that should be reported every time new global health estimates are published, including descriptions of input data and estimation methods.Open access to data and code is also promoted. Developed by a working author group convened by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the guidelines aim to define and promote good practice in reporting health estimates.

Research produced in alignment with GATHER will provide key information that allows scientists and decision-makers to evaluate its quality. Detailed explanations of methods will enable researchers around the world to reproduce studies and potentially make further advances.

Representatives from WHO, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the Lancet, and PLOS Medicine were instrumental in creating GATHER. They will present the key points and discuss the usefulness in furthering the science of global health monitoring and ultimately helping people live longer, healthier lives.
